Global Leadership Program: Spring 2013 Colloquia

The Global Leadership Program (GLP) has had a busy start to the Spring 2013 semester! With enrollment steadily increasing, this semester’s colloquia have seen a threefold increase in attendance since Spring 2012.

The program has hosted three core colloquia so far this semester, including “Cross-Cultural Understanding” on January 30, led by Denise Bellamy (Director of Study Abroad and Exchange) and Tom Martinek, Jr. (Assistant Director of Study Abroad and Exchange); “Leadership Within A Global Context” on February 6, led by Dr. Cathy Hamilton (Director of the Office of Leadership & Service-Learning); and “Beyond Borders: Becoming A Global Citizen” on February 13, led by Dr. Stephen Sills (Associate Professor, Sociology).

In “Cross-Cultural Understanding,” students participated in a series of cultural awareness activities and discussed the theory of the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity. Attendees of the “Leadership Within A Global Context” colloquium analyzed leadership styles in different cultures through a variety of group activities. The third colloquium, “Beyond Borders: Becoming a Global Citizen,” focused primarily on a practical examination of global citizenship through a variety of disciplines, including history, sociology, and cultural awareness.

While this concludes the core colloquia series for Spring 2013, be on the look out for upcoming elective colloquia for Fall 2013!

The GLP is a collaboration between the International Programs Center, the Office of Leadership and Service Learning, and International and Global Studies. The GLP is a program through which students can engage in meaningful international experiences while gaining knowledge and friendships that will guide them in their futures.

Interested students can find more information in the program handbook and on Facebook or they may contact Sadie Kneidel (GLP Coordinator) at with questions or to set up a meeting.
