First Annual Global Experience Conference
Approximately 50 people were in attendance, representing 6 different institutions across the state. In the morning, participants were invited to share their international experiences with one another in a series of networking activities. The rest of the day consisted of workshops and information sessions covering a variety of topics, including “A Transformative View of China Through the Eyes of an African American Doctoral Student,” “Perspectives on Intercultural Sensitivities: African American Students’ Perspectives of Studying Abroad in Spain,” “Getting Involved with Local Communities While Abroad,” and “Finding International Opportunities Beyond Study Abroad.”
Another highlight of the event was the “Two to Tell” contest, a competition in which students had two minutes to share their experiences abroad through a short but creative slide show. Participants were invited to present their experiences as creatively as possible; their slideshow could be accompanied by an excerpt from a journal, an anthropological observation, a short anecdote, spoken word, or even poetry. Conference participants then voted to select winners, who received cash prizes. The first place winner, Esha Grover, titled her presentation “How To Get By on $100 in one month in New Zealand,” and shared how she hitchhiked around New Zealand and relied on the hospitality of strangers for food and lodging.
The contest winners were as follows:
Overall, the conference was a great success, and we would like to thank everyone who participated. We would especially like to thank Seth Fisher, a former UNCG and study abroad student, who served as the conference coordinator and the Oak Foundation for providing financial support for the conference. We plan to hold the conference again next year, either at UNCG or another college or university.
