Scholar and librarian, Mr. Zhongming Xu, returns to China

Mr. Zhongming Xu, a visiting librarian from the Tongji University in Shanghai, China, left Greensboro on December 20, 2010. Before leaving, Mr. Xu conveyed his greetings and appreciation to all who assisted him during his three-month visit at UNCG. The faculty members at the Library and Information Studies (LIS) Department extended their warm welcomes to Mr. Xu who was invited to the LIS meetings, lunches, Halloween Party at CASA Chu, and classes during his stay at UNCG.

Rosann Bazirjian, Dean of University Libraries, and Dr. Sha Li Zhang, Assistant Dean for Collections and Technical Services, made the hosting activities possible through their visions and support, which enable UNCG to bring librarians from other countries for visits, exchanges, and sharing best practices.

Mr. Xu was the first visiting scholar to be selected from Tongji University Library, where he works as a Special Assistant to the Library Director of the Tongji University Library and Associate Director of the Jiading Campus Library of the same university.

In his report, Mr. Xu stated that his visit to UNCG “was very important to me because I learned many different aspects of librarianship and I acquired much new knowledge in various areas of the library’s everyday communication.”

His time in Greensboro included visits to different departments within the UNCG Libraries, as well as to other libraries, such as UNC Chapel Hill Libraries, the D.H. Hill Library of North Carolina State University, and High Point University Libraries.

Visitors from the University of Wales, Trinity St. David

On January 10-12, the International Programs Center and the Department of Kinesiology welcomed two visitors from the University of Wales, Trinity St. David: Ceredig Emanuel, Head of the School of Sport, Health & Outdoor Education, and Nalda Wainwright, Professor of Physical Education and Outdoor Education. Although a snow day, the guests met with Tom Martinek, Jr., Assistant Director of Study Abroad & Exchange, and then had dinner with Dr. Penelope Pynes, Associate Provost, on the night they arrived before going to UNCG the following day.

The visitors met with Professors Pam Kocher Brown and Catherine Ennis in the Department of Kinesiology, followed by a tour of the snow-covered UNCG campus with Study Abroad Coordinator, Logan Stanfield.

They then met with Kaitlin Ritchie, Incoming Exchange Coordinator, before having lunch with Denise Bellamy, Director of Study Abroad & Exchange, and Lindsay Armistead, Transfer Credit Advisor. Our visitors also had a chance to meet briefly with Rachel Jones, an exchange student from Trinity St. David. The primary purpose of the visit was to strengthen ties with the faculty of Kinesiology as we now exchange Kinesiology students.
